Here you’ll find answers to the most common questions about Japanese yen (JPY) transfers.
Sending to JPY
Who can I send JPY to?
You can send JPY to any Japanese bank account domestically and through Swift, as well as to global accounts that can receive JPY through Swift.
What information do I need about my recipient?
For local payments
Full bank account name (usually in Katakana) – this must match exactly what’s printed on the first inside page of the bankbook.
Account number – usually 7 digits
Account type –
普通 (Futsuu) Savings/General
貯蓄 (Chochiku) Savings Deposit
当座 (Touza) Checking/Current

How much can I send?
The amount you can send depends on if your registered address on your Wise account is inside or outside Japan. It can also depend on the currency you're sending from, so check the relevant currency article for more info.
If your Wise account's registered address is inside Japan:
You can send up to:
1 million JPY from your Wise balance
150 million JPY using Send and paying from outside Wise — such as from a bank account or card
If your Wise account's registered address is outside Japan:
You can send up to 150 million JPY to domestic Japan recipients, regardless of whether you’re sending from your Wise balance or paying in from outside Wise
If you are sending to a Swift recipient in Japan, the minimum amount you can send is 1 million JPY. Sending to domestic recipients is cheaper and faster, so please ask your recipient for a domestic account for ‘furikomi’ (振込) purposes instead if you’re sending less than 1 million JPY.

How long does it usually take for the money to arrive?
Once Wise receives and converts your money, it usually takes 1 working day to arrive in your recipient’s bank account. Conversion can take up to 2 working days.
If you're sending to a recipient using the Swift payment network, it will take longer. A Swift recipient is a recipient that has a Swift (BIC) code, rather than a domestic bank and branch code. When sending using Swift, correspondent banks in between may also deduct their handling fees. We can send Swift payments to most major Japanese banks, but please check with your recipient bank for more details.
We recommend asking your JPY recipient for a domestic bank account when possible, as your transfer will be faster and cheaper this way.
When the money is in transit, correspondent banks in between may also deduct their handling fees. We can send Swift to most major Japanese banks, but please check with your recipient bank for more details.
We’ll always give you an estimate for how long your transfer will take when you set it up.
