Emma-Jane Stogdon

If you’re a student and you plan on flying Turkish Airlines anytime soon, you shouldn’t miss out on their student discount. Whether you’re going to school here in the UK, in Türkiye or someplace else, this allows you to get a plane ticket with Turkish Airlines for a lower price.

We’ve prepared a guide on the student discount offered by Turkish Airlines. This includes how to get it, what the restrictions are and how much it reduces the final price.

We’ll also show you a cost-effective way to handle your finances during your trip - the Wise card from the money services provider Wise. It’s designed for low-cost spending around the world, automatically converting your pounds to the local currency at the mid-market exchange rate for only a small, transparent fee*.

Does Turkish Airlines provide a student discount?1

Turkish Airlines has special discounts for students who are members of their Miles&Smiles frequent flyer programme. You can take advantage of this if you’re studying abroad, but also if you study in the UK. Also, it applies to students of all nationalities.

With the student discount, you can get up to 15% off on international transit flights. All flights, whether one-way or round-trip, can only be Economy class flights.

You can also get up to 20% off on domestic flights in Türkiye. This could be a great way to see multiple Turkish cities on one of your next holidays between term times.

How does Turkish Airlines student membership work?

There are only a few simple steps separating you from getting a student discount with Turkish Airlines. First, you need to create a Miles&Smiles account, prove that you’re a student and finally wait for approval of your status.

Here are the steps in more detail:

Step 1: Create an account2

Since the Turkish Airlines student discount is only available for Miles&Smiles members, you should create an account if you don’t already have one.

When you just join the Miles&Smiles program, you will have a Classic status membership. As you collect miles over time, you can upgrade to Classic Plus, Elite and Elite Plus.

Step 2: Sign up to Miles&Smiles

You should then continue to log into your Miles&Smiles account and create your Turkish Airlines student membership. You’ll be asked to provide certain documents that prove your student status.

Step 3: Activate student discount and await approval1

Whether you’re studying in Türkiye or somewhere else, the application process is the same. It’s only slightly different if you’re a Turkish passport holder.

Start by clicking on the "My Personal Information" page and selecting the "Fill in the form" button. You’ll find the "Student (International)" field in the "Add Discounted Passenger Type" section.

After this, you’ll be asked to upload a document that proves you’re indeed a student. This can be your student ID card, ISIC card, student certificate or transcript. Whatever you choose, know that they need to be signed or approved by a competent authority, such as your university, high school or language school.

Your student status needs approval before you can buy discounted tickets. This will take around seven business days and probably even longer if your documents are in languages other than Turkish and English.

Step 4: Login and book discounted flights1

After your student status has been approved, you can start purchasing cheaper Turkish Airlines tickets. Make sure you always log into Miles&Smiles before buying and select “Student” as the passenger type.

Additional benefits of Turkish Airlines student membership

Besides discounted flights, Turkish Airlines also offers some other benefits to students1:

  • You get a free international flight ticket change once
  • By the end of 2024, you get 25% more Miles from all flights
  • All new members get an extra 1000 Miles

Are there any restrictions?1

Since the discount offer is available to a certain category of passengers only, some restrictions do exist.

For starters, students must be between 12 and 34 years old at the time of application. The student membership is valid for only one year. At the end of each year, a new application must be made.

As you would expect, students must provide an ID card or a student certificate signed by a relevant authority. This means that the institution's emblem, name and information must be on the documents.

The last two rules apply to buying tickets. The first is that the Turkish Airlines baggage allowance for students is 40 kg. In case of flights with the per piece concept, students can carry 2x23 kg.

Finally, when booking a ticket, you must consider the time between your outbound and return flight. If you want to use the student discount, that length needs to be under 12 months.
